Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has visited Rev Christian Tsui Hesse, the celebrated photographer and filmmaker who served as the personal photographer of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The visit, which took place on Founders’ Day, September 21, 2025, was to acknowledge Rev Hesse’s immense contribution to documenting Ghana’s political history.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang was accompanied by politician, Goosie Tanoh, and former minister, Alex Segbefia.

In a Facebook post on September 21, 2025, the vice president praised Rev Hesse for preserving a priceless visual archive of the nation’s leadership and development.

“I express my gratitude for Rev Hesse’s work documenting and safeguarding Ghana’s history. His archives capture the facts of our nation’s journey and remain an invaluable national treasure at a time when narratives are too often distorted,” she stated.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang assured him of the government’s commitment to protecting the archives and addressing gaps to ensure future generations have access to authentic accounts of Ghana’s story.

“I assure him of our commitment to safeguarding these archives and filling the gaps to ensure the next generation has access not only to data but to the qualitative truths of our story”, she indicated.

She further noted that Rev Hesse’s work underscores the importance of safeguarding the country’s heritage.

Reflecting on Founders’ Day, she emphasised that Nkrumah’s declaration of independence was a bold step toward African liberation, with lessons that remain relevant in today’s changing global order.

The vice president expressed gratitude for Rev Hesse’s extraordinary service to Ghana and wished him strength and good health.
