Prof. Adei advises Mahama against scrapping betting tax Prof. Adei advises Mahama against scrapping betting tax

Some football fans on social media have chided the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, for admonishing President-elect John Mahama to desist from scrapping the betting tax.

According to them, the academician’s advice is misguided because the youth indulge in betting to gain income for survival due to the high rate of unemployment.

Others also fumed that there are more pressing challenges in the nation that need to be addressed, not betting, which helps people financially.

Some also called on Mahama to reject the advice and go ahead with the promise he made to scrap the tax if he wins the 2024 elections.

What Prof. Adei said that triggered the reactions

While condemning betting and tagging it as evil, Prof. Adei urged the incoming NDC government to increase the tax from 10% to 50%.

“Sin taxes like betting tax must be increased and not scrapped. I will urge them to take it to 50% because it is a disastrous habit that ought to be discouraged.

“I would rather reduce other taxes and keep the E-Levy maybe at a reduced rate, while removing the multiplicity.”

Prof is entitled to his opinion but that wasn’t what was promised by Mahama. Mahama said he will cancel it so that’s what we look forward to.

Imagine every Ghanaian who stakes bet had a remote job in Ghana here that pays 10$ a day, trust me, most Ghanaians will stop betting

Well sir , in as much as betting has its disadvantages that can’t be overlooked, there are still a few people out there who’s survival are dependent solely on betting !

This is as a result of the reckless management of the economy by people your age who want to plunge this…

    — Nana Poku🇺🇸🇬🇭 (@thebignanayaw) December 22, 2024

U won’t give us job but u want to collapse our business. Mahama should dare increase it to 10.01 and the NDC will see shege.
