Gertrude Torkornoo is the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is the Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has attracted a lot of attention on X, following a press statement revealing that President John Dramani Mahama has began consultation processes with the Council of State to discuss petitions calling for her removal.

The development has elicited mixed reactions and sparked widespread discussions among Ghanaian netizens.

Some sentiments shared by netizens reflect opposition to the development, with some individuals arguing that the Chief Justice has not been implicated in any misconduct since her appointment to the Apex Court.

Others who seem to be for the motion have shared excitement, calling for the removal of Torkornoo.

Other trending topics are Captain Smart, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, among others.

Here’s a breakdown of why the topics are trending:

    Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah

The media broadcaster is in the news once again over widespread reports purporting his arrest by the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

Netizens mounted a campaign calling for his release although he has since been reportedly released.

    Captain Smart

The Media General broadcaster has been slapped with a GH¢5 million defamation suit by a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho.

According to the court documents sighted by GhanaWeb on March 25, 2025, the plaintiff stated that Captain Smart made several defamatory comments on his TV show in February 2025, which were later republished on GhanaWeb.

Koku Anyidoho argues that these statements have had a negative impact on his mental health and have tarnished his reputation, both professionally and within religious circles, where he is highly respected.

As a result, he is seeking:

    * GH¢5 million in damages, including aggravated/exemplary damages for reputational harm

    * A retraction and apology

    * The removal of the defamatory content

The President’s priority is to remove the chief justice from office instead of stopping Galamsey. Useless is an understatement.

Honestly, I was waiting to hear from some lawyers before adding my two cents.

But at first glance, this communication from the presidency is trash. The Chief Justice has never been accused or found for any misconduct whatsoever and it will be very difficult for the Council of… pic.twitter.com/6r2eCYjw2E

    BIG NEWS…!! 🔥🔥🔥💯

President Mahama triggers processes for the removal of the Chief Justice on receiving three (3) separate petitions.

ME: 👀🫣 She flatly refused to schedule NDC MPs e-levy suit for hearing & now its become moot.

Seriously speaking ,I don’t get these duo!! These positions are by appointment;so why won’t you do the honorable by resigning rather than being fired and disgraced.??? Do the needful!!

It’s obvious! After ousting the mother Elephant, Dominic Ayine will have the best environment to carry out with his prosecution. The era appointing Chief Justice must end now! The amendment of article 144 must be the priority of the Judicial review committee. #Newsfile pic.twitter.com/hIGnAxAiLT
