President John Dramani Mahama charged the nation to leverage Ghana’s fifth FIFA World Cup appearance as a catalyst for a massive economic and branding gains in his 2026 State of the Nation Address.

Addressing Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026 the President asserted that the tournament, hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, must serve as a strategic platform to market Ghanaian industries and tourism to the world.

He emphasized that the Black Stars’ participation should not be viewed merely through the lens of footballing success, but as a critical opportunity to drive foreign direct investment and strengthen the nation’s global reputation.

“This year, we will strengthen Ghana’s standing in the major global and continental events,” Mahama said.

“We will make our fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, and for us, this is an opportunity to boost national branding and the economy beyond just sports.

Beyond the economic prospects, President Mahama issued a stern directive regarding fiscal discipline and diplomatic responsibility during the global showpiece.

Ghana’s preparations are already underway, with the Black Stars scheduled to use Bryant University as their base camp during the competition, where they are set to face Panama, England and Croatia in the group phase.
