John Mahama is the President of Ghana John Mahama is the President of Ghana

President John Mahama, while addressing the nation in the first State of the Nation Address (SONA), of his second term on Thursday, February 27, 2025, unveiled an ambitious plan to upgrade national stadiums and build new sports facilities.

Ghana has made strides in building sports infrastructure, with facilities like the Cape Coast Stadium and the Borteyman Sports Complex showcasing progress.

However, the country lacks a culture of regular maintenance, as evidenced by the ban on the Baba Yara Stadium by CAF in September 2024.

During his address, President Mahama vowed to improve the culture of maintenance by revamping the sports facilities and adding new ones.

“The Government is committed to refurbishing the existing national stadium, completing new resource centers, and constructing new sports facilities in the new regions,” he said.

The president further disclosed his plan of improving football at the basic level and establishing an organization to monitor sports within schools.

“We will also prioritize community recreational facilities to foster greater participation in sports at the grassroots level. Recognizing the critical role of youth development, we are implementing a significant overhaul of grassroots sports with the establishment of the School Sports Authority,” he further added.

During the President’s SONA, he provided updates on the state of Ghana’s economy, including the ongoing IMF bailout program, security, and the cost of living, among other issues.

Additionally, he updated Ghanaians on deliverables for the year ahead, as well as the achievements of his government so far and the challenges that lie ahead.
