President John Dramani Mahama is set to inaugurate the GoldBod Taskforce on July 8, 2025, to tackle gold smuggling, illegal gold trading, and price disruptions that deprive the state of critical foreign exchange earnings.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, the taskforce will function as a dedicated intelligence unit with enforcement powers equivalent to those of the police, specifically focusing on gold smuggling and related activities.

He emphasised that the taskforce will operate independently of existing security forces to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of its mandate.

Speaking at a press briefing on June 30, 2025, Gyamfi issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in the illegal gold trade: “We know where you are, and we are coming for you.”

He further disclosed that intelligence gathered by his team suggests that some foreigners are hiding in the country to engage in illegal gold transactions.

“If we catch any foreigner, they won’t be deported. They will be prosecuted right here in Ghana,” he stated.

This development comes on the heels of the commencement of the new gold licensing regime under the Ghana Gold Board, which requires all gold traders to obtain a valid GoldBod license.

Ghanaians interested in participating in the gold trade are advised to apply for a license via the GoldBod portal on the Ghana.gov platform.
