President John Dramani Mahama has promised to build stadiums for the new six regions President John Dramani Mahama has promised to build stadiums for the new six regions

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to developing sports infrastructure across the country, announcing that modern sports stadiums will be built in the six newly created regions and other areas currently without such facilities.

Speaking during his nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour in the Western Region on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, President Mahama explained that the move is part of his government’s broader vision to expand sports and recreation infrastructure across the country.

“Under sports and recreation, modern sports stadia are to be built for the six new regions and other regions that do not have them. As I speak, the Minister of Sports and Recreation is overseeing the design of modern sports stadia for the six new regions and the regions that don’t have them, and so Western North is going to receive a modern sports stadium,” he said.

His visit forms part of a nationwide tour to express gratitude to Ghanaians for his election victory in December 2024.

In the Western North Region, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured eight out of the nine parliamentary seats in the last polls, a stronghold that turned out in large numbers to welcome him.

The minister of sports and recreation is expected to continue overseeing the design phase, paving the way for construction to begin in the coming months.

The six new regions, which were officially created on February 12, 2019, are Ahafo with its capital at Goaso, Bono East with its capital at Techiman, North East with its capital at Nalerigu, Oti with its capital at Dambai, Savannah with its capital at Damongo, and Western North, which has Sefwi Wiawso as its capital.

Each of these regions was carved from existing ones to bring the government closer to the people and accelerate local development.
