On Monday, May 5, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama formally declared two automobiles he had received as presents and immediately turned them over to the state.

The remark was made in the Jubilee House shortly after the official launch of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees, a new policy framework aimed at strengthening ethical standards and combating corruption in government.

The code establishes clear criteria for gift declarations, conflicts of interest, asset disclosures, and the use of public resources, a crucial step in the Mahama administration’s efforts to enhance honesty and accountability in public life.

A small handful of top government officials and presidential staff watched the handover. The two gifted vehicles were observed being driven and inspected on the Jubilee House grounds before being officially transferred.

This decision is part of President Mahama’s broader drive to implement rigorous wealth declaration rules.

Earlier in the day, the President issued a harsh warning to political appointees who had neglected to report their assets, stressing that they would face immediate dismissal if they did not comply by Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

According to the new directive, defaulting appointees will forfeit three months’ salary and must contribute one month’s salary to the MahamaCares Trust Fund, a newly established initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals living with chronic diseases across the country.
