President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate payment of nearly $78 million to the contractor working on the Takoradi–Agona–Nkwanta road project, following an inspection of the project during his one-day working visit to the Western Region on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, the president reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing projects inherited from the previous administration.

He said the project is central to the movement of goods within Ghana, particularly from the Western Region, which is endowed with mineral and natural resources.

President Mahama noted the road’s strategic importance made its timely completion a priority for his government.

“Last week I directed the finance minister to release all outstanding payments. The total amount is almost $78 million, and this will be paid so the contractor can continue and finish the project ahead of schedule.

“At the rate they are working, I am confident they can complete it early, and once finished, it will open up this corridor, providing significant benefits to the region.” he remarked.

Five key policies of President Mahama that are winning public praise

President Mahama said the completion of the project will enable Ghana to fully harness the economic benefits.

“I ask Ghanaians to bear with the contractors. Ghana is becoming a major construction hub, and within 24 months, we will all witness the benefits of these works. Other projects, such as the Takoradi Interchange, Nungua Interchange, Takoradi Market, Market Circle Market, and KJTR Market, were halted previously due to the debt exchange, but these are now back on track and progressing.

“This corridor connects Ghana to neighboring countries and facilitates the movement of goods and resources across West Africa. Completing it will have far-reaching benefits for trade, commerce, and local development”, he added.
