President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the immediate restoration of sixty-four (64) radio stations affected by recent regulatory sanctions.

In a statement issued on Thursday, June 12, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, he expressed concern over the decision to suspend the operations of the stations, insisting that while regulatory compliance is essential, it must be balanced in its actions to protect press freedom.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of sixty-four (64) radio stations affected by the regulator’s action,” the statement said.

President Mahama stressed that forcing stations off air while they await the regularisation of their authorisation risks undermining the country’s democratic tenets.

“Requiring radio stations to shut down while awaiting the regularisation of their authorisation could limit the space for expressing such freedoms,” the president noted.

He further instructed the minister to work closely with the NCA to determine a timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorisation.

“The president has asked the Minister to work with the NCA on a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorization,” the statement added.

On June 12, 2025, the NCA, ordered the immediate closure of 64 radio stations for regulatory breaches.

The affected stations included, Asaase Radio, Wontumi FM.
