President John Dramani Mahama has officially endorsed the Absa Black Star Marathon as a national tourism event, vowing to elevate it to Africa’s premier marathon.

The announcement, made during a vibrant launch ceremony at the Independence Square underscores Ghana’s ambition to position the marathon as a global attraction, blending sport, culture, and tourism.

“We will make this the best marathon in Africa. The Absa Black Star Marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of Ghana’s spirit, resilience and beauty,” President Mahama declared to a crowd of athletes, dignitaries, and tourism officials.

The inaugural Absa Black Star Marathon, which took place on July 26, 2025, has drawn thousands of runners from across Africa and beyond.

The event featured a full 42.2km marathon, a half-marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run, catering to both elite athletes and recreational participants.

The race route showcased iconic landmarks such as the Black Star Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and the vibrant streets of Accra.

The tourism minister emphasised the marathon’s role in boosting Ghana’s tourism sector.

“This event will highlight our cultural heritage, from the rhythms of our music to the warmth of our people. It’s a chance to show the world why Ghana is the heart of Africa,” she said.

Organisers have also prioritised sustainability, partnering with local environmental groups to ensure a plastic-free event and promote eco-friendly practices.

Cultural performances, including Highlife music and traditional dancers, will line the race route, creating a festive atmosphere for participants and spectators alike.

President Mahama’s endorsement aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to leverage sports for tourism, following the success of events like the 2023 African Games.

The Absa Black Star Marathon is poised to join the ranks of iconic African races like South Africa’s Comrades Marathon and Kenya’s Nairobi Marathon, with ambitions to surpass them.

The Marathon promises to be a landmark event, uniting sport and culture while positioning Ghana as a must-visit destination.

With the government’s full backing, the race is set to leave an indelible mark on Africa’s sporting and tourism landscape.
