President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that, he will cut sod for the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region soon, following an inspection of the site by aviation authorities.

“Soon, I will come and invite you all to go with me to the site to cut sod for the construction of the airport”, he said.

In a report by gbconline.com, on February 11, 2026, President Mahama said that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed the site’s suitability for the project.

This project is expected to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism, and stimulate economic growth.

He also indicated that the project will be funded through the new airport infrastructure development levy approved by Parliament.

“By courtesy of the Majority Leader and his Members of Parliament, they have approved the new airport infrastructure development levy so the airport will be funded out of that levy,” he noted while addressing the Upper East National House of Chiefs on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

The Regional Minister for Upper East, Donatus Atanga, showed optimism about the project’s commencement, hoping for a swift completion and commissioning.
