President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama

The president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called for lasting peace in Bawku and adjoining areas following a long-lasting conflict that has claimed the lives of many and destroyed several properties.

According to him, such conflicts hinder developmental projects and stifle Ghana’s democracy.

The president’s call comes at a time when tensions are heightened at Bawku and its environs as ethnic and chieftaincy disputes have left many displaced and deserted.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, President Mahama called for a concerted effort to smoke the peace pipe and embrace peaceful cohesion.

“In the spirit of unity and brotherhood, this independence represents, I wish to speak to you directly, my brothers and sisters in Bawku and everywhere in our land where conflict is ragging. I do not speak as president, but as a son and brother in whose hands you have entrusted a solemn duty. The people of Bawku and other areas, it is time for lasting peace to prevail. Our children deserve to inherit a peaceful land where their dreams are nurtured, not where their nightmares are relived. They deserve to inherit a land where are markets are buzzing with trade, not tension and conflicts. They deserve to inherit schools that echo with learning, not melancholy,” he said.

Mahama also stressed the need not to be swayed by mistrust and the experiences of past happenings.

“Let us give renewal of friendship a chance. Let us give peace a chance. This is not an invitation to forget the past, it is far from it, it is an invitation to live above it,” he added.
