President John Dramani Mahama has named Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The decision comes in the wake of the recall of Baba Jamal, who stepped down from the role to contest the Ayawaso East by-election after the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Nasser Mahama Toure.

News of the appointment was made public by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement shared on Sunday, March 1. The announcement was accompanied by a public endorsement from the sector minister.

“Congratulations, Baba Sadiq on your well-deserved appointment by President Mahama as High Commissioner designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I have no doubt you will hold aloft Ghana’s flag and make the youth of our continent proud,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said on X on March 1, 2026.

Baba Sadiq, who represented the National Democratic Congress as its parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central in the 2024 general election, is now set to take up diplomatic duties in Nigeria. In his new capacity, he will be tasked with advancing Ghana’s strategic interests and deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and regional engagement between Ghana and Nigeria.
