    Prelim Results From San Juan

Puerto Rican buzz saw Elise Soto mowed down Dominican Liliana Martinez like a thresher going through a wheat field. It didn’t matter that these two ladies, as well as the rest of the female fighters on tonight’s card, we’re fighting 3-minute rounds. Martinez couldn’t stand up to the non-step barrage of Soto. Referee Luis Pabon rescued Martinez at 1:59 of the second round. Soto improves to 10-0, 9 KOs. She is managed by tonight’s headlining star. Amanda Serrano. Martinez falls to 25-24, 16 KOs.

In another Puerto Rican civil war, bantamweights Abner Figueroa and Edwin Rodriguez went at it over six hard-fought rounds. Rodriguez tried to apply his experience, which was more than three times that of Figueroa, but it wasn’t enough as the judges scored it 58-56 twice and 60-54, all for Figueroa, who moves to 8-0, 1 KO. The tough luck Rodriguez falls to 12-10-3, 5 KOs.

Fellow Puerto Rican super featherweights Yandiel Lozano and Johniel Cotto had the sparse, early crowd somewhat divided as each man did some decent work. Lozano stung his foe with the first punch he threw in the first round but couldn’t really capitalize on it for the remainder of the bout. The final scores read 58-56 twice and 60-54 all for Lozano, who improves to 3-0. 3-3, 1 KO.

Opening the huge Serrano-Tellez show in San Juan, Puerto Rico, were fellow bantamweight debutants Caleb Tirado and Justin Hill. The Olympian Tirado showed too much skill, speed and power for Hill to last. A left to the body followed up by a flurry of punches in the corner prompted referee Jose Rivera to step in and save Hill from further damage. The time was 1:59 of the second round. Tirado starts out at 1-0, 1 KO. Hill starts out at 0-1.
