Pratt (L) has expressed his curiosity over remarks made by President Mahama (M) and Haruna (R) Pratt (L) has expressed his curiosity over remarks made by President Mahama (M) and Haruna (R)

Conversations have intensified since two high-profile government officials recently suggested that Ghana could have its first-ever female president soon.

The conversations began when the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, stated that he hopes to see Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang rise to become Ghana’s first female president.

It is my prayer that you become Ghana’s first female President – Haruna Iddrisu to Prof Naana Jane

Welcoming the vice president to the Ministry of Education on her official visit on September 24, 2025, Iddrisu described the moment as a great personal honour.

He stressed that her elevation to the second-highest office of the land is a milestone for women in leadership.

“It is my pride and honour to welcome you back to the Ministry of Education, this time in an elevated capacity as the first female Vice President of our Republic.

“It is my prayer that God will give you long life and good health…that probably you will be elevated to become the first female president. May Allah grant you the strength,” he said.

Not very long after Haruna’s remarks, a similar statement was made by none other than the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, during the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on October 12, 2025.

The president expressed optimism about Ghana electing a female president in the near future, emphasising that the country’s progress in empowering women in leadership positions is a clear indication that it is ready for a female head of state.

“… In my capacity as the African Union champion for gender and women’s empowerment, the government of Ghana has continued to take decisive steps to mainstream gender across our national development policies. We’ve achieved historic milestones, including the election of Ghana’s first female vice president and the unprecedented appointment of women to leadership positions in government- the judiciary, the security services, and key national institutions.

“These are not just symbolic gestures. They are affirmation that women deserve a seat at the table of the highest levels of decision making. And I am confident that in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and [there] will be a woman president of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

However, it appears that the pronouncements of these two high-profile figures have raised eyebrows and stirred curiosity among some individuals, including Kwesi Pratt Jnr.

The veteran media broadcaster and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, reacting to the pronouncements, asserted that something he described as “interesting” could be going on at the presidency as well as within the government.

In a post on X on October 14, 2025, he stated that whatever is happening is being carefully monitored by interested parties.

“Something very interesting is happening in the Presidency and observers are watching with very keen eyes and listening with anxious ears,” he wrote.

According to him, the pronouncements from the minister and the president do not appear to be coincidental.

“First, it was Honorable Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education who said directly that he sees a future President of Ghana in Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the sitting Vice President. Haruna who has been mentioned in what many believe to be a scientific poll by Global Info Analytics as the frontrunner in the race to replace as President has repeated this prediction.

Ghana to have first ever female president in the near future – President Mahama

“President John Dramani Mahama has also on two occasions said that he is “confident that in the very near future, there will be a woman President of Ghana… Well, something is definitely happening at least at the Presidency and in the Government machine and we can see and feel it,” he stated.
