According to the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, talks have been held with Jamaican Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel about a possible concert at Accra Sports Stadium.
He said this during a press conference on July 17, 2025.
A possible December performance has been reported, sparking excitement, as well as concerns among football fans about protecting the stadium’s pitch.
However, Ampofo Ankrah says the Authority is making efforts to accommodate both sporting and non-sporting activities at the national venue.
“The facility is not only the pitch; we have other amenities that can be used equitably,” he told Citi Sports on July 15, 2025.
“For Vybz Kartel, what I can say is that there has been engagement, there has been contact, and for now, that is all I can say,” he added.
Concerns about hosting non-sporting events at sports venues have continued due to the NSA’s past difficulties in protecting playing surfaces during these events.
In several cases, failure to use proper pitch covers has left the turf in poor shape, making it unfit for top-level football matches.
A recent case is the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, banned last year from hosting CAF Category A matches after a big church event damaged the pitch.
The venue hasn’t yet been cleared for these games.
