POLL OF THE DAY: Should social media be banned for under-16s in Britain?

    • Final results will be announced in tomorrow’s poll

    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

    Published: 07:00 EST, 13 January 2026 | Updated: 07:03 EST, 13 January 2026

Cabinet splits are emerging over whether to ban social media for under-16s, with ministers facing mounting pressure to act after Australia took the step last month.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle said an Australian-style ban was ‘not the right way to go’, but Wes Streeting voiced interest in it because of the impact on children’s health.

The comments follow Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch‘s commitment to ban under-16s from social media such as TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat.

Downing Street said ministers were monitoring the Australian scheme, which fines companies for breaches instead of punishing children and parents.

But Mr Kyle told Times Radio the Government was not looking at a ban, while the Health Secretary said: ‘We’re allowing a lot of unsupervised use of technology.’

Now you can have your say in the Daily Mail’s latest poll – do you back such a ban?

In yesterday’s poll, Mail readers were asked: ‘Should Britain get involved in military action against the Iranian regime?‘ Some 76% of you said ‘no’ and 24% said ‘yes’.
