THE Volta Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Regional Police Command has intercepted 44 bags of compressed weed substances suspected to be Indian hemp at Tehe Cattle Range in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The 44 bags of the suspected Indian hemp were valued at GH¢2.2 million.

The Volta Regional Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, in an interview with The Ghanaian Times, said the two suspects in possession of the substances bolted, leaving behind two unregistered motorbikes used in their nefarious operations.

Mr. Gomado noted that on December 31, 2025, around 1:25 pm, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Richard Gablah of the Volta Regional DLEU led a team to the Battor-Aveyime Police Station to officially take custody of the suspected Indian hemp.

According to him, the police seized the two motorbikes along with the substances, which were taken by the team from Ho to the Regional Police Headquarters.

Mr. Gomado also revealed that the police mounted a manhunt for the two suspects who were on the run and appealed to residents in the area and beyond the North Tongu District to provide timely information that could lead to their arrest.

The Volta Region Public Affairs Officer explained that the interception of the substance was the first of its kind in the North Tongu District, stressing that it was, however, unclear whether the suspected Indian hemp was cultivated locally or transported from other jurisdictions.

Mr. Gomado further indicated that the police had increased surveillance in the North Tongu District to determine whether Indian hemp was cultivated in the area, locate farms and farmers, or trace goods in transit through the district.

He said that as part of preliminary investigations, ASP Gablah randomly opened two of the sacks and took a parcel from each of the dried leaves for field testing.

Mr. Gomado added that the DLEU team from Ho was later led by the Aveyime Case investigator to the scene at Tehe Cattle Range to conduct further investigations into the case.

He later handed over the docket to ASP Gablah for continuation of the investigations, and the Aveyime District Police Command assured the DLEU of its readiness and commitment to provide support in every aspect of the investigations.
