Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah has expressed concern over the public jubilation following the removal of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

According to the controversial security expert, while he advocated for a change in the police hierarchy, he is not pleased with the open celebrations.

However, he asserted that the jubilations by some officers of the Police Service communicate a clear message about what they endured during Dampare’s administration.

“When Akufo-Addo took over, the then IGP was retired, but nobody jubilated. Why are the police jubilating now? That should tell you what they were going through during his period,” he said in an interview with Joy News on March 15, 2025.

He added, “When Mr. Oppong Boadu was replaced and Dampare was appointed, nobody jubilated. Why is it that police officers are now celebrating at the National Headquarters and various police stations? That should tell you something.”

COP Mensah expressed hope that the newly appointed IGP would bring positive reforms.

“I am not happy with the jubilation, but I am happy with the change in leadership because now we are going to have a leader who will listen and do the right thing,” he stated.

The retired COP was previously accused of undermining the immediate past IGP, to the extent that a parliamentary committee was set up to investigate an alleged plot by him and others to remove Dampare from office.

On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.
