England bowler Brydon Carse will not be charged after an investigation into an alleged assault was dropped by Derbyshire police.
Carse, 31, was removed from second Test consideration after being de-arrested following an incident at a Derby nightclub on August 22.
The police said they were looking into allegations of assault. That has now been dropped but it remains to be seen if Carse will be disciplined by England as a cricket regulator investigates.
Carse, who was part of England’s squad for the first Tests against Pakistan and their leading wicket-taker during the Ashes defeat in Australia, was released without charge, having been out celebrating with Durham team-mates following their win over Derbyshire in the County Championship.
A short video posted on social media showed Carse, 31, surrounded by four police officers outside the club, with fellow Durham stars Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts in the background. One of the police officers is heard to say: ‘Just get him over there’.
The news came not long after England’s new Test captain, Joe Root, abolished the team curfew that had been in place since the Ashes defeat in January, insisting his players should be trusted to behave like ‘grown adults’.

Police previously said the pace bowler was ‘de-arrested… having agreed to leave the area’.
Carse had been celebrating Durham’s County Championship win over Derbyshire.
Current England captain Root declared himself ‘really hacked off’ by the latest drinking drama to engulf his side, telling reporters the team must now work hard to regain public trust.
The England and Wales Cricket Board declined to comment.
