Emerging reports indicate that the Police Council has recommended a two-year re-engagement term for Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, who is due for mandatory retirement.

According to 3news.com, the recommendation has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the IGP’s mandatory retirement, which falls in December 2025, just a few days away.

Akufo-Addo appoints Christian Tetteh Yohuno as Deputy IGP

The report added that the president is expected to approve the Police Council’s recommendation, which would extend the IGP’s tenure by two years.

Tetteh Yohuno was appointed by the president in March 2025 to succeed his predecessor, Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police.

In a statement issued in March 2025 by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, it was announced that the president, acting in accordance with the 1992 Constitution and the advice of the Council of State, had made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

Yohuno’s Appointment: Retirement knocks at the door of IGP, but what’s next?

“He replaces COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
