The Volta Regional Police Command has intercepted 26 sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp in an America Ford Wagon with the registration number GV 2460-14 with the inscription “Ministry of Health’’, and was driven by Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, 38 years old.

The interception followed a tip-off received on January 23, 2026, that a Ministry of Health vehicle loaded suspected narcotics from Dzolokpuita, the capital of Ho –West District and was heading towards Ho.

The Volta Regional Public Affairs Director of the Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, made this exposure in a statement copied to the media in Ho, said the command was worried about the use of state vehicles in nefarious activities.

He said the estimated value of the substances valued at GH¢1, 022, 500.00.

Mr Gomado said a team of police officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), Police Intelligence Unit (PIU), and the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were dispatched for surveillance.

According to the Regional Public Affairs Director, Dogbey, the driver of the state vehicle, was signaled to stop at the Ziavi checkpoint but he refused and sped off, a development which compelled the specially trained police officers to chase him.

Mr Gomado revealed that the police arrested him and after a searched on the vehicle 26 maxi sacks containing 2,045 yellow shaped of wrapped compressed leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found.

He said the suspect is in police custody assisting the police in investigation, while efforts were being made for the exhibit to be taken to the forensic laboratory for examination and analysis.

Mr Gomado assured the people of the region that the police would enhance surveillance as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking activities in the region.

Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Health Directorate in a statement signed by the Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Atsu Dodor, stated that management upon receiving the information, dispatched a team to the Regional Police Headquarters to verify the incident, which was later confirmed.

Dr Dodor said Dogbey is one of the drivers of the Regional Health Directorate, and the suspect is currently in police custody assisting in investigations.

He added that while the police continued with investigations, the directorate had also initiated internal processes, including the establishment of a committee of enquiry, to independently investigate the matter and prevent a recurrence.
