Ken Ofori-Atta (L) and Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu (R) have been caught up in extradition battles Ken Ofori-Atta (L) and Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu (R) have been caught up in extradition battles

Ghana’s public sphere has been buzzing with drama and debate. From former public servants caught up in extradition battles to a media personality sparking nationwide outrage over comments on homosexuality in a Senior High School, the week has been anything but quiet.

The following personalities dominated headlines and conversations, and GhanaWeb presents a roundup of the figures who captured the public’s attention.

‘Illegal alien!’ – US ICE confirms Ofori-Atta overstayed visa, faces deportation.

    Ken Ofori-Atta

Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, grabbed headlines after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed he had overstayed his visitor visa, classifying him as an “illegal alien.”

Ofori-Atta entered the U.S. on May 28, 2025, with a visa that expired on November 27, 2025. ICE officials explained that his violation could lead to deportation.

He has been issued a notice to appear before a Justice Department immigration judge and remains in custody while the legal process unfolds.

Back in Ghana, he faces multiple corruption-related charges linked to his tenure as the Minister of Finance.

Authorities have formally requested his extradition, though ICE insists U.S. due process must be completed before any extradition is considered.

Here is when convicted Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu will appear in US court.

    Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu

Former MASLOC boss, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, is being held at the Nevada Southern Detention Centre in the U.S., according to Ghana’s Ambassador, Emmanuel Victor Smith.

Her arrest adds a new chapter to a corruption saga that began years ago.

In April 2024, Sedina was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison with hard labour after being found guilty on 78 counts, including financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy, money laundering, and procurement breaches.

The offences, committed between 2013 and 2016, involved misappropriation of MASLOC funds, inflated procurement costs, and misused disaster relief allocations.

Sedina fled Ghana under the guise of medical treatment abroad, but her arrest now sets the stage for possible extradition to serve her sentence.

OSP declares former finance ministry advisor wanted over SML corruption probe.

    Ernest Darko Akore

Though less of a household name, Ernest Darko Akore, former Technical Advisor at the Finance Ministry, has also been thrust into the spotlight.

Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declared him wanted in connection with the controversial Revenue Assurance Contract between the GRA and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

A public notice issued in July 2025 revealed that Akore, 67, may hold dual Ghanaian-American nationality and is suspected to be hiding in the U.S., U.K., Hong Kong, or South Africa.

The High Court’s Criminal Division has issued a warrant for his arrest, intensifying the manhunt.

While Ofori-Atta’s case dominates headlines, Akore’s alleged role underscores the shadowy network behind Ghana’s financial scandals.

PRESEC slams Serwaa Amihere over ‘breeding grounds for homosexuals’ comment.

    Serwaa Amihere

Away from politics, media personality and lawyer, Serwaa Amihere sparked outrage with remarks about Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon.

During a live broadcast on GHOne TV, she described the school as a “breeding ground for homosexuals.”

The comment, which quickly went viral, drew sharp condemnation from PRESEC’s management, who labelled it false, reckless, and offensive.
