President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reflected on the support he received during his tenure, recalling how many individuals used to visit him regularly and showered him with gifts.

Mahama recalled that numerous individuals used to visit his residence to check on him and engage with him, while others presented him with abundant gifts.

However, the kindness and attention he received halted dramatically after he lost the 2016 general elections to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service held at the Ringway Gospel Assemblies of God Church in Osu on December 15, 2024, Mahama explained how the shift in people’s attitudes left a lasting impression on him.

“When I lost in 2016, the Christmas hampers stopped coming. The many people who used to come to my gates just to see me for a minute stopped coming. It was only my siblings, my family, my closest friends, and my church members who continued to stand by me,” he said.

Mahama also emphasised that he would not be swayed by the praise he has since been receiving following his victory in the 2024 general elections.

He expressed gratitude for the support but underscored that he will remain grounded and aware of the ‘short-lived’ nature of public admiration.

“So for me, these trappings of power don’t get to my head. I know that all the praises and blessings showered on me by people are temporary. It’s because of that word attached to your name, ‘president.’ One day they will go, and you’ll be left with those who truly care,” he added.

Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, emerged victorious in the 2024 election, securing 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total votes.

His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

Mahama’s inauguration ceremony is scheduled for January 7, 2024.
