Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has reflected on his illustrious career, shedding light on the internal challenges he faced within the national team camp.

During an Instagram live session on Thursday, December 2, 2025, Gyan revealed a disturbing plot that sought to undermine his authority.

The former Sunderland striker shared how, during his tenure as captain, certain individuals within the team worked to sabotage his influence on younger players.

According to Gyan, his reputation initially endeared him to new players, who would eagerly seek his guidance.

However, within days, their behavior would change, and they would begin to avoid him.

“The kids would come into the team, all excited to see me, but then three days later, they would avoid me because they had been brainwashed,” he said.

Gyan further explained how these incidents cost him the respect of the younger players and impacted the team’s performance after his departure.

“People brainwashed the kids against me, so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed—where are they now?” he questioned.

The retired striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His six goals at the FIFA World Cup make him the highest-scoring African player in the tournament’s history.

In June 2023, Gyan officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 18-year career.
