Ghanaian musician Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has claimed that some media personalities played a role in preventing her hit song ‘16 Years’ from winning an award.

Speaking in an interview on Zed FM, where a snippet of the interview was shared on Instagram, Mzbel revealed that certain media personalities were against her song receiving an award because they believed it conveyed an inappropriate message to the youth.

“I was denied an award for my song ‘16 Years’, even though it was a global hit. I was everywhere with ‘16 Years’. However, some media personalities criticised me on TV, questioning what message I was sending to our youth. Their comments discouraged people from supporting my song for an award, which led to it not winning any award,” she stated.

According to Mzbel, despite the song’s popularity, the backlash from sections of the media negatively affected the song and, subsequently, its chances of winning an award.

The singer further alleged that this was not the only time her music had faced such opposition.

She recalled a similar experience with her song ‘Awoso Me’, where she was initially nominated for an award but later removed due to concerns over the lyrics.

“When I released my song ‘Awoso Me’, I experienced a similar situation. I was initially nominated, but later they removed me from the nominees, claiming that I was using inappropriate language,” she added.
