CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, has disclosed that his decision to pursue a career in music instead of medicine led to backlash, not just for him, but for his mother as well.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on June 10, 2025, Richie stated that many people were shocked by his career choice, as they had expected him to follow a more traditional path into medicine.

“When I started my journey, I was 17, and a lot of people said I was too young. After I completed senior high school, I had a conversation with my mum and told her I wanted to do music. It was a bit shocking because everyone expected me to go to medical school,” he recalled.

Richie explained that he initially planned to explore music during a one-year interval after high school. He said that brief plan, however, evolved into a full-blown career.

“I told my mum I was going to see what I could do within that one year. During that time, I opened a studio, and she saw what was happening, and that led to everything you see today,” he said.

Despite his progress, Richie noted that his mother was heavily criticised for supporting his dreams.

“So many people insulted her. They said she was allowing her son to waste his intelligence and future. They insisted I should pursue medicine instead of music,” he revealed.

Richie also recalled being underestimated when he first released his music, with critics calling him “too young” to succeed.

“Even when I released music, people kept saying, ‘he is a small boy.’ But after I succeeded, I released a song to remind people not to let others limit their dreams. Don’t look at my age and think I can’t achieve great things,” he said.

He concluded by referencing his track ‘Yaaro’, explaining that the title, which means “small boy” in Hausa, was a statement to prove that age should never define one’s potential.
