The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has withdrawn from a scheduled inter-party meeting organised by the National Peace Council ahead of the Akwatia by-election, citing inadequate representation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP, the NDC delegation consisted solely of constituency-level executives, with no national executives present.

This, he argued, undermined the credibility and purpose of the meeting.

“We are very disappointed because we accorded this meeting the utmost respect. We came into this meeting fully represented by the Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, and the National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, only for us to see the representatives of the NDC side. All of them are constituency officers, constituency organisers, deputy organisers, deputy secretary,” he is quoted as saying by opemsuoradio.com.

Nana Boakye emphasised that the NDC’s constituency representatives lacked the authority to commit their party to any binding agreements on ensuring a peaceful by-election.

As a result, the NPP opted to boycott the meeting until the NDC is represented by its national executives.

“We raised this objection before the meeting commenced, and we also requested that the NDC be fully represented by their national executives. Otherwise, we will not be able to participate in this,” he stated.

The by-election, set for September 4, 2025, was triggered by the passing of the late Ernest Kumi, the former Member of Parliament for Akwatia.

Ahead of the high-stakes election, the National Peace Council had organised the meeting to foster dialogue among political parties and promote a peaceful electoral process in the constituency, which has a history of electoral tensions.
