The National Peace Council (NPC) has condemned the violence and assaults that characterized the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The NPC in a press statement issued on Friday, July 11, 2025, voiced serious concern at episodes involving physical assaults on journalists and a former state minister, characterizing such actions as risks to Ghana’s peace and stability and abuses of individual rights.

“The Council strongly condemns these violent acts, including the assault at the Methodist Polling Station in Odorkor, and urges all voters, security personnel, and observers to remain calm, exercise restraint, and allow the Electoral Commission and security agencies to carry out their duties peacefully,” the statement said.

The Ghana Police Service’s prompt decision to detain an officer who was captured on camera abusing a journalist was praised by the Peace Council. Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were also asked to join forces against political violence.

The NPC called for justice and urged the police to carry out in-depth investigations and hold all of the offenders accountable.

“The NPC is closely monitoring the situation and calls on all stakeholders to prioritize peace and uphold democratic values throughout the electoral process,” the release ended.

The rerun, which was tense and took place in 19 polling places, came after unresolved disagreements from the general elections in December 2024.
