A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has announced his intention to contest the National Chairmanship position of the party in its pending elections.
In an official statement signed by him and dated Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Afoko indicated that his decision to contest followed careful reflection and consideration of the party’s need for a change in leadership that upholds its values and ideologies, as well as his deep commitment to the party.
Here’s why Paul Afoko used to switch TV channels anytime NPP news popped up
“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers.
“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our Party,” portions of the statement read.
According to Afoko, the party is at a crucial point, and he believes he can contribute immensely to its restructuring and to the fostering of unity among its members.
“My commitment to the NPP has remained steadfast through the years, and I believe the time has come to contribute, once again, to the rebuilding and strengthening of our Party at this critical juncture,” he added.
Despite acknowledging the challenges he encountered as a former National Chairman of the party, he stressed that he has “always chosen to prioritise the unity and progress of the NPP above all else.”
Afoko stated that he will be engaging with the party and its members to share his ideas and vision for the party, as well as what he plans to bring on board if elected.
Afoko joins the fray alongside Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi); former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko; former General Secretary John Boadu, and others in the race.
NPP yet to realise its full potential – Paul Afoko
Background
Paul Afoko was suspended indefinitely from the party in 2015, during his tenure as National Chairman, following a unanimous decision by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC).
They accused him of working against the party’s flagbearer’s chances of winning the 2016 Election.
