The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a reduction in the cost of ordinary passport booklets from GH¢500 to GH¢350.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 13, 2025, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to making passport acquisition more affordable for all Ghanaians.

He said, “The government recognises concerns about the affordability of the new passport and is committed to ensuring that the cost remains reasonable while maintaining high security standards. In our effort to make passports more accessible to all Ghanaians, and per the instruction I have received from the president, we are pleased to announce that the cost of the ordinary passport booklet, the 32-page, will be reduced from GH¢500 to GH¢350.”

“We will, in the coming days, be presenting the amendment of the fees and charges to ensure that this reduction is approved by the House,” he added.

In February this year, Okudzeto Ablakwa had raised concerns about the high cost of passport application fees and assured the public that reducing these fees would be a top priority under his leadership at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He emphasised that obtaining a passport is a fundamental right for every citizen, not a luxury, and insisted that the cost must be reasonable to ensure accessibility.

To enhance efficiency and clear backlogs, Ablakwa also announced that passport offices would operate 24 hours a day to expedite the processing of applications.
