A passenger has died after a luxury orange supercar crashed into a parked truck in Melbourne.

The V8 Ford Mustang GT in twister orange crashed into the unoccupied truck on Dunmore Drive, in Truganina, a western Melbourne suburb about 1am on Wednesday.

Two people were in the car at the time of the crash. The passenger died at the scene while the driver was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Horrifying images from the crash site show the luxury car smashed to pieces with large chunks of the vehicle scattered dozens of metres away from the main bulk of the car.

A chunk of the sixth generation Mustang’s roof had been cleanly separated from the vehicle and was spotted quite a fair distance from the car.

Shockingly, the truck appeared to be largely unscathed.

There appeared to be only a small amount of damage to the corner of one of its back doors.

Later on Wednesday morning, firefighters were seen inspecting the engine of the Mustang, which is one of the most powerful cars on Australian roads.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Ford Mustang is Australia’s most popular sports car.

A previous model, similar to that of the one involved in the collision, can be purchased secondhand for around $65,000.

The iconic American muscle car can deliver 339 kilowatts of power from a 5.0-litre V8 engine.

Police have urged witnesses or people with dashcam footage to come forward.
