The Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV The Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV

The Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV, at the 2024 Asogli Te Za Grand Durbar in Ho recently expressed his concern about developments in our country as a result of extreme partisanship in our body-politic.

The respected traditional ruler’s concern centred around growing tribalism, extreme political partisanship and rising lawlessness in the country.

Togbe Afede XIV opines that because those at the helm of affairs have no respect for the truth, lawlessness and over-politicisation of the nation’s economic and social life have become fertile ground for greed and corruption – a situation he describes as the “biggest obstacle to our development”.

He added that: “While other leaders are focused on development, ours have been focusing on property ownership. They have replaced our colonial masters in the reckless scramble for national resources that belong to all of us”.

Besides, Togbe Afede XIV noted that lawlessness and indiscipline have become a bane to the nation. “Real leaders are very honest and committed to the principles of truth, transparency, justice and the rule of law. But in our country, these principles are generally bastardised in the pursuit of partisan political and selfish desires.

“Our democracy has become an enterprise that benefits a few. Ghana has become like an orphan child raped by the very people who have obtained our mandate to take care of her.” As the country goes to the polls in less than two weeks, the political temperature is hotting up with the two leading political parties hard at work wooing the electorate.

“It is our fervent hope that this year Ghana will again maintain its enviable position as a beacon of peace and democracy in a region that is plagued with upheavals and political instability.

“As the forerunner to political independence on the continent, a lot is expected and demanded of us. And if we should by our own actions and inactions descend into chaos and confusion, just because of exercising a civic duty, then we would not only have let ourselves down but a whole nation that triumphed at being the first to attain political independence.”

Political differences should not divide a nation since unity is strength. Let us approach the December polls as a nation simply going to elect officers to carry out our development aspirations.
