The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will officially launch the second edition of the Democracy Cup match on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Media Relations for Parliament, Dr. David Sabastian Damoah, dated Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the launch will serve as the official platform to announce the two competing teams for this year’s edition.

“The Parliamentary Service of Ghana will host the 2nd Edition of the annual Democracy Cup match in August 2025. The 1st Edition was held at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 17, 2024, between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, with Asante Kotoko emerging as winners,” the statement said.

“The one-off football competition, an initiative of the Parliament of Ghana introduced to the Ghanaian football calendar in 2024, will be launched by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at the Parliament House, Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium, on July 24, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.,” it added.

The statement urged football fans and the general public to rally behind and participate in the game.

The Democracy Cup is an annual football competition initiated by the Parliament of Ghana in 2024 to celebrate 30 years of parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic, which began in 1992.

Organised by the Parliamentary Service of Ghana and sanctioned by the Ghana Football Association, the event aims to promote unity, civic engagement, and democratic values through sports.

The inaugural match, held on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, featured a high-profile clash between Premier League clubs Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, with Kotoko winning the title by a score of 2–1. A curtain-raiser match between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players preceded the main event.
