Under siege Attorney General Pam Bondi has wielded the axe in her department, firing a top prosecutor who put Jeffrey Epstein behind bars and suffered a recent catastrophic loss in the trial of music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI chief James Comey, was dismissed from her role as a prosecutor in the Manhattan US attorney’s office on Wednesday.
Comey worked on the cases against both Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, helping to send Maxwell to prison for 20 years after the billionaire financier killed himself in his cell while awaiting trial.
Bondi has faced calls to lose her job over an investigation her department was leading into Epstein’s crimes failed to deliver on campaign promises to unveil his client list and reveal the truth about his death.
High profile MAGA loyalists have led theories that Epstein was murdered, rather than killed himself, and that a purported client list would unravel a web of crime at the very top of high society.
Bondi, after initially claiming the client list was ‘on her desk for review’ now insists no such list exists, and maintains that he did kill himself.
It is unclear why Comey was axed.
She was leading the violent and organized crime unit in the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), the same position her father once held.

Her name was referenced in every US attorney pronouncement about the Combs’s trial.
Comey delivered the closing arguments on the final day of Diddy’s trial, and faced criticism when he was ultimately cleared of the three most serious offenses.
Legal experts questioned whether he was ‘overcharged’ and how the case went so wrong for Comey and her team.
According to the New York Times, Comey received a letter informing her of her termination.
She was reportedly told she was being fired under Article II of the Constitution, which cites powers granted to the president.
Trump has long disliked Comey’s father James, but tensions reached a fever pitch in May when he shared a picture to Instagram of seashells spelling out 86 47 – which Donald Trump Jr. claimed was the former FBI director ‘casually calling for my dad to be murdered.’
Many other Trump administration officials soon also asserted that James was advocating for the 47th president’s assassination.
James has since denied that he ever intended to harm Trump, and even told Secret Service officials that when they questioned him over the phone that night.

The Secret Service had James followed by law enforcement authorities in unmarked cars and street clothes as he and his wife traveled from North Carolina, through Virginia and to their home in the Washington DC area
James has been the subject of Trump’s ire since he began the FBI’s probe into claims that the president’s 2016 campaign colluded with Russian authorities to influence.
Trump fired him in 2017 after the then-FBI director confirmed Trump was under investigation.
