Palestinian footballer Muhannad al-Lili has died from injuries he sustained when Israeli forces bombed his family home in the Maghazi refugee camp, in central Gaza.

Al-Lili, who played for Nadi Khadamat al-Maghazi football club, was gravely wounded in the airstrike a few days ago. Despite desperate efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries, local outlet The Cradle confirmed.

His death is another devastating blow to Palestinian sport, already battered by the ongoing conflict that has cost countless lives and uprooted entire communities.

Muhannad al-Lili’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief in the local football community, where he was known not only for his talent on the pitch but for representing hope and pride for his club and fans amid unimaginable hardship.

Since October 2023, Israel’s war in Gaza has killed over 57,000 people, with some estimates closer to 75,000, and left tens of thousands more wounded.

Entire neighbourhoods, hospitals, and farmland have been destroyed, pushing millions to the brink of famine and forcing almost the entire population to flee multiple times.

Aid points have turned deadly, with dozens killed while waiting for food. The UN has described the situation as “apocalyptic,” as Gaza’s people endure relentless airstrikes, hunger, and mounting civilian casualties.
