The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has criticized the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over financial claims submitted in relation to the 2023 All African Games without the necessary supporting documentation.
During a sitting of the committee, PAC members questioned a GH¢35.8 million claim reportedly made for the deployment of 6,000 police officers who provided security during the continental sporting event. According to the committee, the ministry failed to provide adequate documents to justify the expenditure.
The committee also raised concerns over a separate GH¢455,000 hostel accommodation bill linked to the Games, citing the absence of supporting records and receipts.
Ranking Member of the committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, expressed concern about recurring irregularities within ministries and suggested that frequent reassignment or rotation of ministry officials could help reduce such infractions and improve accountability in public institutions.
The 2023 All African Games, hosted in Ghana, involved significant government expenditure on infrastructure, logistics, security and athlete accommodation.
