Popular entertainment personality Robert Klah has warned that a growing appetite for foreign media, especially among Ghanaian children, is eroding interest in indigenous content.

In a discussion on Hitz FM on August 6, 2025, Klah highlighted the worrying trend, sharing how children are developing a taste for foreign foods because of the media they consume.

“We have allowed a lot of infiltration of foreign material. So you have kids asking their parents, ‘I want pizza’ because the food being mentioned isn’t banku or waakye.

If it were our stories being told, they would mention kenkey and banku and all that. But the children are hearing ‘pizza’ and ‘fried chicken’. That’s what they’re hearing and being oriented towards,” he said.

While Klah acknowledged that foreign content isn’t inherently problematic, he argued it must be counterbalanced with deliberate strategies to promote and preserve local narratives.

He praised the reintroduction of the popular children’s TV series By The Fireside, which aims to revamp indigenous storytelling.

“These things are relevant, but we need to think about it from a very strategic angle, how to promote and preserve culture so that people feel deeply connected to it,” he added.

Klah also called on the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) to play a more active role in this cultural revival.

“I’m also wondering what the Ghana Association of Writers is doing in this regard. Writers should have what it takes to narrate and preserve our stories,” he said.
