Following a devastating fire at Accra’s Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025, which destroyed over 100 shops and displaced numerous traders, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to rebuild the market as a modern facility with enhanced security measures, including the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

Dr. Bawumia’s pledge is consistent with his overall endeavor to strengthen national security through technology. In August 2024, he announced plans to deploy 50,000 CCTV cameras in Ghana’s biggest towns to improve security and battle crime. This effort intends to provide comprehensive surveillance across important sites, allowing law enforcement to more effectively monitor and respond to illegal activity.

The proposed redevelopment of Kantamanto Market includes a multi-story complex that will accommodate all enterprises, with a focus on the original vendors who were harmed by the fire. To prevent future tragedies, the plan incorporates modern infrastructure such as fire safety systems, proper water supply, sanitation, and waste management systems. Furthermore, the use of green spaces and energy-efficient technologies is meant to promote sustainability while lowering operational expenses.

The integration of CCTV cameras into the new market infrastructure is expected to increase security for both traders and customers. These surveillance systems will allow for real-time monitoring, deterring any criminal activity, and providing crucial evidence in the event of an incident, all contributing to a safer trade environment.

Dr. Bawumia’s broader security program includes the nationwide deployment of CCTV cameras, with a particular emphasis on covering all routes in regional and district capitals. This comprehensive approach is based on research conducted by security organizations that show the need for widespread monitoring to successfully monitor and minimize crime across the nation.

The reconstruction of Kantamanto Market, together with the statewide installation of CCTV cameras, demonstrates the government’s commitment to using technology to improve security and economic development. By updating vital infrastructure and adopting advanced monitoring technologies, the administration hopes to provide a better environment for commercial growth and public safety.

As these plans progress, the government emphasizes the importance of stakeholder engagement, including consultations with traders, local governments, and community leaders, to ensure that the new marketplace meets the needs of all users while also supporting the livelihoods of those affected by the recent disaster.
