Asantehene Otumfuo Osei II fumes over recent Black Stars performance Asantehene Otumfuo Osei II fumes over recent Black Stars performance

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed his disappointment over the poor performances of the Black Stars in recent times.

He indicated that the team’s abysmal results demonstrate a problem with the competency of the Black Stars‘ technical team, which needs to be addressed urgently.

The Asantehene further called for a shake-up in the technical team and asked that the selection of the players be based on merit, rather than affiliation to persons within Ghana football.

During Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams’ visit to the Manhyia Palace on February 14, 2025, Otumfuo noted that the Black Stars‘ performances have left many people disappointed, prompting a call for a reset.

“The Black Stars have become a disgrace. We need a good technical team to manage the team. Currently, they’re not in good form, consistently breaking people’s hearts.

“They exited the last tournament earlier than expected. We must call in the right players. I’ve told Kotoko that good players should be allowed to play, not those with affiliations,” he said.

This comes after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), leading to widespread criticism.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) restructured the technical team, retaining Otto Addo and John Paintsil’s roles as head coach and assistant.

To strengthen the team, German coach Winfried Anton Schafer was appointed as Technical Advisor.

Despite these changes, some individuals believe it won’t be enough for the team to excel as expected.
