Nigeria will be without star striker, Victor Osimhen, when they face South Africa on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, for the decisive World Cup qualifier after he picked up an injury against Rwanda on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

Osimhen was forced off in the 35th minute during Saturday’s clash in Uyo, following a heavy challenge from a Rwandan defender that left him clutching his shin.

Initial checks by the medical team suggested the damage was only minor, but by Sunday, September 7, 2025, the forward reported fresh discomfort.

Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed the update.

“Team doctor has diagnosed a bruise on Victor Osimhen’s shin. He woke up this morning still in pain and will not be part of the squad travelling to South Africa for Tuesday’s game,” Efoghe told reporters.

The absence of the Galatasaray striker is a major blow for Nigeria, who sit third in Group C and desperately need a win over Bafana Bafana to stay on course for the 2026 World Cup. Notably, the Super Eagles are yet to record a victory in a match Osimhen does not start.

Osimhen will now return to his club in Turkey for treatment as he battles to recover in time for Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 18, 2025.
