The Ghana Government Transition Team, which represents President Akufo-Addo, has reacted to concerns voiced by President-elect John Mahama’s transition team over continuous recruiting and payments. The response verifies that these processes have received all essential governmental permissions and are not considered illegal.

Fatimatu Abubakar, the Government Transition Team’s spokesman, issued a press statement outlining major decisions made at the Transition Committee’s second meeting on December 13, 2024, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The committee voted to create six new subcommittees to handle several areas, including finance and economy, energy and natural resources, legal and governance, infrastructure, interior/public safety (security), and social sector. Each sub-committee will be made up of three members from both the departing and new governments, with senior civil servants, such as the Head of Civil Service, Head of Local Government Service, and Cabinet Secretary, joining committees as needed.

The co-chairs also requested that notes be handed over to the subcommittee chairs as soon as possible so that work could commence. These notes are intended to facilitate beginning talks, with the first set of assignments due within a week.

Furthermore, exiting sector ministers, agency heads, and technical personnel will be invited to help sub-committees in reviewing their respective sectors’ handover notes.

In response to questions concerning continued recruitment and payments, the statement underlined that these procedures are legal and have received statutory permission. The statement stressed that the current government’s term expires on January 6, 2025, and that any specific claims of illegality should be submitted to the Transition Committee for investigation and resolution.

The committee further recommended the public to avoid any statements implying that ongoing recruitment and payments should be submitted to the transition team, as such claims contradict the meeting’s official records.
