Former France striker, Olivier Giroud, has shared his challenging start to life in the United States since joining Major League Soccer (MLS).

Giroud signed for Los Angeles FC on a free transfer in April 2024, marking the end of his long career in Europe. However, he has yet to find his rhythm, failing to score in 15 league appearances for his new team.

Reflecting on his time in the U.S. during an interview with Mirror Football, Giroud spoke about the difficulties he has faced, including power outages, wildfires, and an earthquake, all of which have left him fearing for his safety.

“Since I arrived in LA last summer, we had three power outages in five days — lasting 10, 12, and 15 hours. There was a massive earthquake while we were at the training ground. Then came the wildfires. It was a really sad situation — people lost everything,” he said.

Despite the hardships, the World Cup winner praised the efforts of first responders and expressed hope for better days ahead.

“We thank the firefighters and first responders who did an amazing job. It made me really sad. I was scared. I also had a personal bad experience. Hopefully, better days are ahead. It’s part of life,” he added.

Giroud also spoke about his decision to move to the U.S., emphasising his desire to expose his children to a different way of life.

“Sometimes, you have great days, and sometimes, you go through tough moments. It was my wish to finish my career here in the U.S. and give my kids the opportunity to experience a new culture,” he said.

Though retired from international football, Giroud remains France’s all-time top scorer, with 56 goals in 137 appearances.
