The use of motorcycles and tricycles, popularly known as ‘Okada,’ holds significant potential as a convenient, timely, safe, and cost-effective mode of transportation.

These were the words of President John Dramani Mahama when he delivered the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

He stated that the Ministry of Transport will amend the Road Traffic Regulations of 2012 (L.I. 2180) to regularize the use of Okada for commercial passenger transport.

President Mahama further noted that the Ministry of Youth Development and the Ministry of the Interior will facilitate training for young people in the Okada business, covering areas such as road safety regulations, financial literacy, and digital skills.

Additionally, they will assist in the acquisition of motorbikes to support the industry.

He also announced the introduction of electric motorcycles under a hire-purchase scheme to reduce dependence on petrol and enhance the profitability of the Okada business.

    Background

President Mahama’s address, in line with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, outlined his ambitious “Resetting Ghana” agenda, aimed at tackling economic challenges, creating jobs, and restoring stability.

In his speech, the president highlighted key policy objectives of his government, provide updates on the state of Ghana’s economy, including the ongoing IMF bailout program, and address issues related to security and the cost of living.

Additionally, he updated Ghanaians on government deliverables for the year ahead, achievements so far, and the challenges that lie ahead.
