The Communications Director of the Unity Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has called on the government to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), currently headed by Kissi Agyebeng.

He expressed deep disappointment in the OSP’s performance, criticising its inability to expedite the prosecution of corrupt officials who, he claims, have looted the nation for personal gain.

Owusu argued that the government should scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor and redirect its budget to the Attorney General’s Department to train and recruit more legal practitioners.

“I don’t have any trust or confidence in the OSP and its operations. At best, that office must be scrapped. With the budgetary allocation given to the Attorney General, if he is unable to recruit more lawyers, he could use those funds to bring in qualified professionals to help the state, rather than what we are currently doing,” he said during The Key Points on TV3.

Owusu also expressed frustration over the delayed prosecution of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is reportedly residing in the United States.

He claimed that some of the financial agreements signed by the former minister were questionable and that he should be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“When we push him a little, the next thing you hear is a press conference, just to weather the storm. Then he goes quiet for a month, a year, and then another press conference. Yet we all know Ken Ofori-Atta should be in this country. We’re talking about the National Cathedral.

“How much did he spend? He led this country to borrow 13.5 billion dollars. The man says he won’t come back to the country. The last time we heard anything from him was through his wife, saying he was doing okay and would return. So what are we doing?” he quizzed.
