Bus passenger numbers are expected to reach 100,000 on Christmas Day thanks to expanded services.

Operators are meeting demand fuelled by a fall in the proportion of young people able to drive, said industry body the Confederation of Passenger Transport.

Among the areas which will have extensive bus services are Brighton, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.

Long-distance coaches will also run between towns, cities and airports across the UK.

That is in stark contrast with the rail network, which has no passenger trains on December 25.

In the capital, Transport for London will not run any bus or tube services.

The CPT said Christmas Day passenger numbers on local buses have grown from 60,000 in 2019 to 87,000 last year.
