Hon. Wilson Amos Agblemor, a member of the Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region, has expressed concerns over the proposed merger between AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana, calling for a full and independent parliamentary probe into the deal.

Agblemor questioned the consistency of the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, citing earlier statements that the government would invest in Airtel-Tigo to turn it around. “I’m personally not impressed at the shift in posts by the Honorable minister,” Agblemor said. “As we speak, I’m not entirely sure if this is a takeover or merger.”

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has also demanded a comprehensive parliamentary inquiry into the proposed deal, citing concerns over transparency, due process, and consistency in the government’s handling of the matter. They argue that the deal risks devaluing AT Ghana, the country’s only wholly Ghanaian-owned telecommunications company, and could lead to job losses and collapse of competition in the telecom sector.

Agblemor emphasized the need for parliamentary scrutiny, stating, “The best thing to do is to take this matter to parliament. There, the decision will be scrutinized and the best course of action decided.” He added, “There’s need for a full and independent parliamentary probe into this deal so we all ascertain if it’s a transparent and prudent alternative”.

The proposed merger has sparked debate, with some arguing it could protect jobs and strengthen the sector, while others see it as a disposal of a national asset. The government has maintained that the restructuring aims to address AT Ghana’s accumulated debts and strengthen the sector.
