The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late Dr Ibrahim aaMurtala Mohammed, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, who died in the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

The decision was made at a National Steering Committee meeting held at the party’s headquarters on Monday, August 11, 2025, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution.

In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Monday, August 11, 2025, the party noted that the circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat became vacant and the potential for heightened national polarisation at this critical time influenced their decision.

“The NPP is of the belief that it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP.

“The Party believes that the tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country should be avoided”, the statement said.

The NPP added that the most fitting tribute to the late MP would be to ensure unity and peace in Tamale Central.

“It is the considered view of the Party that the greatest tribute that the NPP and the rest of the nation can pay in honour of the departed, is not only to win the fight against Galamsey but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central,” the statement added.

The party further stated that the most fitting way to honour Dr Murtala Mohammed and the other crash victims was not only to intensify the fight against illegal mining otherwise known as galamsey.

“When the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election, the NPP will, in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest,” the statement added.
