Former MP for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has responded to accusations of tribalism by urging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to confront the realities of the Bawku conflict and its implications for the party’s electoral fortunes.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Dr Adomako Kissi stressed that candid discussions backed by data should not be misconstrued as ethnic or sectarian attacks.

“Being candid and straightforward with data is not a sin. When you refer to data, you are not being tribalistic, and religious aspects should not come into play,” he said.

His comments come amid growing debate over the party’s performance, following criticism that raising concerns about the Bawku conflict equates to tribalism or religious bias.

The controversy follows the circulation of a video in which NPP presidential hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong mentioned the Bawku conflict while assessing the party’s electoral difficulties in the area. The Northern NPP Concerned Youth Group accused Dr Acheampong of fueling “ethnic bigotry,” sparking public criticism.

Dr Adomako Kissi defended Dr Acheampong, noting that the video may have been misunderstood or misrepresented. He argued that Acheampong’s intention was to highlight broader political realities, not to inflame ethnic tensions.

“This issue is very sensitive, but I believe it is either misinformation directed at Dr Bawumia or a misunderstanding caused by how the message was conveyed to him,” he remarked.

He further stressed that if the party’s flagbearer had hailed from a different religious or ethnic background not linked to the Bawku conflict, the political outcome might have been different.

Dr Adomako Kissi concluded that the NPP must learn to distinguish between honest, data-driven analysis and ethnic or religious interpretations if it hopes to make realistic gains in future elections.
